birthday party with the boys

When Kohan's dad text me last night to see what the boys needed to bring.  I text him back with swim suits, a good attitude, willing to have fun, and cooking skills.  They brought all of that.  It was Tal's birthday.  Kohan's birthday was earlier this month.  So we decided that both birthdays would be celebrated today.  We made individual pizzas for lunch.  They really got into that project.  Then went to the Putt n Go.  Bumper boats, go karts, and the water slide were all fun to do.  Then we went home to shoot BB guns.  Cake and ice cream while we watched the movie RV.  I had all I could do to stay awake during the movie.  I have watched that movie many times but I missed the best line in the movie.  It was was when Robin Williams put up his hand then said talk to the hand and then he turned it with the back of the hand outward and said sorry call waiting.   All the rest of the day we spent doing that line.  The more we did it the more we laughed.  When they left to go home Tal yelled out of the truck talk to the hand, call waiting.  We all laughed again. What a day.  I took a nap when they left.

Hubbard Mothers Pie Social

Don't get Hubbard Mothers Homemakers confused with Ole Mother Hubbard's cupboard.  They are not one in the same.  There are 13 homemaker clubs that function under the umbrella of the extension service.  We have a pie social as one of our only money makers.  It is held in Becida at Arlys Fricke's home.  They live on Fricke's corner about three  miles north of the Bar and Grill.  We have a free will offering and serve pie and ice cream and coffee. It is a fun event.  I am slowly getting the names of the people in Becida.  But I still would not pass a test.

Wood Carvers Festival

My ant creature was made to hold a flower pot, but was a great fit for my latest bowling ball.

The wood bench

Saturday started out just to go to a block rummage sale on Red Pine Road.  But then we remembered the Wood Carvers Festival in Blackduck.  A lot of walking and a lot of looking for just the right purchase.   I bought the rock ant and took it home for my latest bowling ball/gazing ball to rest on. With the very early start we were hungry and a cinnamon and sugar fry bread was just the ticket.  With renewed energy off we went to finish looking.  I really like the oar bird house but it wasn't in my budget today.  My friend liked the wooden bench maybe for her fire pit to be.   We talked to a lady that showed us her son's first carving of a woodpecker.  It was really good.  But I said it is easy to carve, all you have to do is take away everything that is not a woodpecker.  She told me that was the first time she heard that and planned to used that saying herself.
Then the question of the day should we go to Anderson's fabric shop.  Duh.  I am very proud of myself as I got out of there without a purchase.

The Little Grant Dock

The board walk starts in the parking lot and goes right out to the new dock.

We caught 21  fish.

I probably am in trouble for letting Kohan shot a BB gun as he is only 7.  But Tal and I supervised him very closely and taught he about gun safety.  Somehow when I moved I didn't think my box of BB's moved with me so I bought a new jar of them.  Then of course I found my original box and now I have way more I need to put the run on any small critter in my yard.  We also were able to fit in fishing, book club, and a trip to the visitor center.  Their Dad's want my secret because both of them were in bed by 8:30.  We need to go to bed as Judy just wore us out.

Knitters meet

First Lutheran knitters met for coffee and chatter at Wilda's home.  Her dessert was delicious.   Each person brings a new dimension to our group. Our discussions  are serious, funny, informative and interesting.  I for one really needed a good belly laugh and we had several.  One of the belly laughs happened when we discussed words, names and sayings.  One of our gals told us about her childhood the name for a chocolate nut sundae was Little Dick.   She said she ordered many of them.  You just went up to the counter and said "a Little Dick please."  You probably had to be there for it to be funny.  We really laughed.  But words do evolve over the years.  Off the top of my head is the word gay.  It use to mean a happy time.  I had a gay time.  Not any more.  There are many other examples of this.
Another story that was told was one gal worked as a soda jerk and a guy came in and asked for a male sundae.  She looked confused until he said with nuts.  Lol.
We plan to have coffee again in August.

Hardanger

Hardanger embroidery or "Hardangersøm" is a form of embroidery traditionally worked with white thread on white even-weave cloth, using counted thread and drawn thread work techniques. It is sometimes called white work embroidery. It is easier if you use colored thread as you can see it much clearer on you first few projects.   I  have completed one piece, but I'll tell you right now it was not a labor of love.  It was my type A personality that dictated that I must finish this project. I do not remember anything that I did from that project, hence the new  lessons.  Judy and I got lessons from Yvonne on Wednesday.

The exact origin of Hardanger embroidery are not known but it is thought to have its beginnings in ancient Persia and Asia. During the Renaissance this early form of embroidery spread to Italy where it evolved into Italian Reticella and Venetian lacework. By 1700 variations of this type of embroidery had spread to northern Europe where it developed further into Danish and Dutch Hedebo, Scottish Ayrshire work and Ruskin lacework as well as Norwegian Drawn Work, as it was then called.
In the period between 1650-1850 Hardangersom (meaning: work from Hardanger area) flourished in Norway.

My pouch is lined and I have a magnet closure on this piece.

I am making this small pouch.  Might use it for my cell phone.

This is what I accomplished in an hour
It is a pouch for my cell.  I am trying to decide whether I should bead a handle or a longer one for my neck. As you can see the hearts are all one thread off.  They would be centered otherwise.  That is the nature of the beast when you are doing hardanger.

pumpkins gone wild

My pumpkin plant has gone wild.  It is in a 4 foot by 4 foot raised bed. You can't see the raised bed anymore.  There are pumpkins setting on.  Only one of the four seeds I put in there germinated.  I am lucky for that.  This one pant is taking over covering everything.  I think I need a bed away from the other three just for pumpkins.  My neighbor has one built maybe I can ask to buy it from her for next year.  It is twice the size of my raised beds.  Actually I have solved the problem as I got a king sized water bed frame which I will put in next year.    It was my brothers and it didn't sell at the rummage sale and the auctioneer for his estate auction said that he could not sell it at the auction as they just don't sell well.  As soon as it is cooler I will set it up and fill it with dirt.

Being a tourist

After we were done with the Bemidji fishing dock,  I took the boys to the visitor center.  I really enjoyed reminiscing, but the boys were seeing these for the first time and I really like seeing them through a child eye.  Each  new over sized item started a new discussion.  Kohan liked the money and Tal liked the huge pencil.  The best item in the center in my opinion is the amazing fireplace.  Try as I may explain the significance of all the different rocks from each state and provinces, the boys attention was back to the over sized relics.  Look at that bobber.  Look at that shotgun shell.
