Desserts by Design

Recently, I attended Desserts by Design a fund raiser for the Bemidji Symphony.  It was interesting to see the different tables.  Each sponsor set a beautiful table for eight guests.  They were responsible for making a dessert for their table.  When we arrived at the event we were offered wine and a time to look at all the other tables.  I was at the table called Danke  Shoen.  It featured  Hummel figures and German china.  It was beautiful.  We had Black Forest Cherry Cake.  The entertainment was performances of trios and quartets from the symphony members.  I understand that they made over 5 thousand dollars at this event.

I love  symphony music.  I go when ever I can. I once heard it said like this.  When you first hear a symphony piece you either love it or hate it.  If you hate it you can learn to appreciate it -- but it never becomes part of your soul.  When I listen to a good piece it moves my soul.

It was such a great evening I know I will go again next year.

Quilt for a raffle

The  relocation project for the freestanding arch that was taken from the entryway of the old high school needs money so my best way of contributing is quilting.  I have constructed a quilt to use in a raffle to make a little bit of money for the project. My theme was the old school, the new school, and Minnesota icons.   It is a queen size and I will up-date when the raffle is ready to go.

Old Bemidji High School Remembered

Yesterday the Old Bemidji High School Remembered committee held a meet and greet in the Bemidji Library.  My classmates that attended were Sharon Fruetel, Linda Lemmer, Sharon Hirt, LeRoy Johnson and myself.

 There were others that worked in setting up the display which was beautiful and very artfully done. My classmates that set up were Chet Wilander, Sharon Fruetel, Linda Lemmer, Sharon Hurt and Norman Malterud. We served apple cider and pumpkin bars. 

We have identified two promising building sites:  the current BHS Campus and the Lake Bemidji waterfront park.  I am pulling for the latter as it would get more exposure in that location.  Think of the picture opportunities for senior class pictures, weddings or reunions. Money and a champion for the cause are what is needed.  Isn't true in most things that money is the bottom line.   

Screw covers

I bought my first camper in 2002.  Well, that isn't entirely true.  I had several camper before this, but my husband always took care of them.  As women we don't learn much when we are taken care of by our man.  Don't get me wrong I like being pampered.  But I digress.  Back to my first camper.  I was 18 feet long, but the problem was I had never pulled a trailer before.  I purchased it in Bismarck, North
Dakota.  When it was time for me to leave they gave me minimal instructions and sent me on my way.   Talk about being scared.  I white knuckled it all the way home.  It was 150 miles to my home in Beach, North Dakota.  All went well, but I found out later that I was just lucky.  Trailer hitches have a place for a pin so they can not open while you are pulling the trailer.  I didn't have that.  My friends told me how lucky I was that it didn't come unhitched while I was pulling it. 

That summer I had tons of things to learn including backing it which today I can say that I am better at it.  Hopefully some day I can say that I am a good backer.  I have up graded to a 30 foot toy hauler which I feel is easier to back then the shorter trailer. 

One of the things I learned is that a trailer does not have screw covers to prevent moisture coming into the trailer.  I was camping with a group of friends.  I watched as the men got things out of their trailer storage units.  They would open the unit and there was a clip that held the cover in the air while they rummaged in the storage.  I mentioned that I wished I had those on my trailer.   My friend said he could not believe that I didn't have them  We went over to my trailer and of course there they were. 
All along I had them, but I thought they were screw covers.  We really had a great laugh about that.

Larger then life night life

I was driving home the night before deer hunting opener in 2010.  As I was turning off the gravel road onto the main tarred road going to my home, my lights swept the field and I saw what I thought was a deer in the field.  But then the animal stood up and a tail as long as the animal itself appeared.  I knew I was looking at a large Mountain Lion. Since this experience I have heard that my neighbors have had similar experiences.  I am more aware of the my surroundings since then.

Invasion of the baby frogs

Minnesota has had two wet years in a row.  This spring I noticed an abundance of frogs on my drive way in the morning.  I wasn't prepared for what I found in my sunken patio.  For about a week I picked frogs and transplanted them to a near by swamp.  I thought about using them for bait, but that didn't work out.  The final count was 250 frogs. 

Something very few people have seen

Going for my daily walk I saw a frog on the road.  It would not hop away like most frogs do when you get near them.  On closer inspection I found that it had double strips.  My first thought that I was looking at one of the mutant frogs from the chemicals in the water systems.  But on closer examination I saw that it was two frogs.  And they were mating.  Check out the picture.
