A week ago I gave several of my friends lessons on how to use the rulers and cutting board for quilt making. They are both making rag quilts for their grand kids. I really think that rag quilts are the place to start when you quilt because they are so forgiving on the accuracy. Also when you finish sewing and are ready to rag the quilt they have already accomplished the stippling. They can then move on to more technical projects.
