Decorating

This is my homemakers group decorating the Fern Hall for our Halloween party.  We put on a Halloween party for the Becida kids.  We serve hot dogs, chips and cookies. We play bingo all night and there are games for the kids to play with spider rings and mini candy bars for prizes.   I guess I will be calling bingo this year.  Last year I was in the fish pond and missed the entire  party.  I can hardly wait to see all the little tots in their costumes.

world relief

This picture is of a women in India looking at a quilt.  First Lutheran sends quilts to Lutheran World Relief each year.  I wonder if the gal made her own quilt or is this one of the Lutheran quilts.  It is hard to tell.  We quilt 12 hours a month.  We send anywhere for 60 to 80 quilts a year.  Not  only to World Relief, but we donate quilts to 4 local institutions in Bemidji who help distribute them.  I think that is around 40 quilts to these local institutions. Other quilts that we make goes to heart felt gifts for important people or events.  All the fabrics are donated by our congregation.  We are always in need of sheets for backs to complete these projects.   The knitters also contribute to both causes.  Baby sweaters for world relief are made and afghans for local contributions are made.  This keeps us busy and out of mischief.

Moving Pastor Cory

This Saturday 25 members of the First Lutheran congregation gathered to move our pastor to his newly purchased  home.  We had 7 trucks with trailers.  I brought my truck and there was an extra trailer that was dropped off to be used.  We hooked her up and filled it too.  They have a beautiful home in a subdivision North of Bemidji.  They should be very happy in their new home.  What a blessing to get a pastor that we all can enjoy and relate to.

Memoirs of the Johnson Family

I just finished reading a book, Memiors of the Johnson Family, by a Bemidji author Mary Ellen Johnson.  This book is about moving their family from Bemidji to Philadelphia,  Mississippi during the racial strife that our country went through. They were in Mississippi  from 1968 to 1973.
Gary Johnson worked in law enforcement on the Red Lake Reservation.   He was relocated on the Choctaw Reservation in Mississippi. The book is written in short stories about their life and adjustments that they all had to make.  It is a very good read.  On November 28th we get to talk to the author about the families experiences.

soup kitchen

Thursday my high school graduating class prepared and served the meal at the soup kitchen. They ate a lasagna type casserole, lettuce salad, bread and dessert.  The soup kitchen serves between 100 to 150 meals any given night.  Homelessness is a continuing problem in Bemidji. It brings up questions to me such as why our churches send thousands of dollars to foreign countries when we have a very definite problem right here. Is there a missionary program here?  Have any country sent money to the US to help with our problems here? I am just saying...............   I know there aren't any answers to my questions.

Our class always has a great time when we are together.  I feel even closer to them then I did when I was in high school.  We laugh, joke, and reminisce.  The class of 64 ever.

ww movie

The rise and fall of Hitler movie was sponsored by the book club.  It was very factual and interesting.  I know we must always remember what happen then so that it does not happen again. Our book club read Sarah's Key and In the Garden of the Beasts which dealt with this subject.  Presently we are reading the Life of Pi.  Now the movie is coming out the end of November.  It's a date if you are thinking that it is a must see.

compost box

I had planned to construct a wooden box for my compost.  Most people just put a chicken wire fence up in the woods to start composting.  But I have no woods.  So I went to Home Depot and bought a   ready made plastic box for this project.  It was cheaper then the wooden one that I planned to build and easier to use as it has a door on the bottom to get the compost out to use it.  It has a nice lid.  Now I need someone that would be willing to part with some manure and a little dirt.  Maybe next spring I can find some.  Since it is an election year it might not be hard to find either one.

membership drive

my donation for door prizes
The American Legion Auxiliary  hosted a membership drive.  Anyone interested came to check us out.  We served  appetizers, had door prizes, and did the meet and greet.  Our club is getting up there in age and we do need to attract new members.  When I am considered one of the youngest  there is a need to recruit. We recruited 1 Legionnaire, 2 senior member auxiliary, and 1 junior member.   It was fun.

cupcakes for baby Lonnberg

They kind of look like cupcakes.

I made this to take along with my other gifts when I go see my grandson in the hospital.  All right I know I will have to take my truck to haul the things I have made for him already.   That is beside the point.  I just thought this was a great idea. You roll a onesie with a sock in the middle than put them in a  cupcake holder and into the cupcake box.   But mine did not roll as well as the one that the was in the picture.  I wondered if I was going to find cupcake boxes in Bemidji.  But even in this north country where red necks are plentiful I was able to find a cupcake box similar to the one in the pictures.  I was planning on ordering them on line, but I made one try that Bemidji might just have them.  And I found them.  Cute idea.

It's fall do you smell the Lutefisk? #2

Full of energy, but that didn't last long

Time for a mid morning coffee break

The church does not smell of lutefisk as it is cook in a u-haul truck

The annual Lutefisk Supper was held this last Thursday at the First Lutheran Church. There was over 100 take outs and close to 600 meals served.  It was a very successful event.  It is our main money maker for the church women.  We need a new leader because the gal that has done it for 9 years.is over ready to retire.  Our other money maker is our spring garage sale.  That is also a very successful project.  I am already finding things to put in the sale.    I am also hoping that the Festival of Tables is brought back.  It has been several years since our last one.  It was very fun.  Everyone was very tired after the supper.
